The Steinway Model L is a 5’10½” (180 cm) grand piano, often classified as a “living room grand” due to its balance of compact size and full, resonant sound. Introduced in 1923, it quickly gained a reputation for its rich tonal depth, warm character, and impressive projection—qualities that made it suitable not only for home use but also for teaching studios and smaller performance spaces.

A distinctive feature of the Model L is its square-tail design, which allows for a slightly larger soundboard area compared to more tapered grands of similar length. This design contributes to enhanced bass response and a more robust overall tonal presence. Built primarily at Steinway’s New York factory, the Model L became especially popular in North America.

Throughout much of the 20th century, it was considered a versatile and reliable instrument, favored by pianists who wanted near–concert grand performance in a more manageable size. Production continued until 2005, after which it was effectively succeeded by the Model O, which shares similar dimensions but incorporates modern refinements in design and construction.
