Grinnell Brothers pianos were made by one of the historic American piano manufacturers, with the company beginning as a music business in Michigan in the late 19th century and building its first pianos around 1902. Originally founded in Detroit after the Grinnell family expanded from selling organs into piano production, the company grew to produce a wide range of instruments—including uprights, baby grands, player pianos, and later spinets and consoles—often under the Grinnell name and other house brands.

During the first half of the 20th century, Grinnell Brothers became notable for its large manufacturing operations in Detroit, MI, and Windsor, Ontario, and by the mid‑1900s it was one of the biggest piano distributors in the United States with dozens of retail stores. Instruments from this era were generally built as solid, reliable home pianos with a warm tone suited for practice and family use, and many vintage Grinnell Brothers uprights and spinets are still found in homes and on the used market today.

After being sold in the 1950s and later going through business decline, the original company ultimately closed in the early 1980s. A revived Grinnell Bros. Piano Co. was launched in the 1990s to sell pianos built to traditional specifications, but most surviving instruments are antiques valued both for their historical significance and, in some cases, for restoration potential.
